Mr. Leslie Harding Maynard, 91, of 346 Church Road, Clinton, died Wednesday at his home.

Mr. Maynard, born in Sampson County, was the son of the late James Elmon and Effie Maynor Maynard and the widower of Lorine Brewington Maynard. He was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Dixon Maynard and two brothers, Floyd Maynard and Eldridge Maynard.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Lorine Brewington on Feb. 17, 1947 and to this union, two children were born. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a deacon. He was a retired carpenter from his business, M&M Builders. He spent many of his days working outside, using his hands, building and making things from scratch. He loved to garden, watch NASCAR and sit on his front porch and watch cars drive by.

In 1980, Mr. Maynard and his wife became foster parents, and later adopted Lacinda, Lynette, Ray and Amanda. Over a span of 19 years, they were foster parents to 28 other children.

He is survived by four daughters, Loretha M. Carter and husband Don of Clinton; Lacinda Freeman and husband Wayne of Bolton; Lynette Davenport and husband Jerry of Greenville; and Amanda Jones and husband Chris of Salemburg; a son,Lucas ray Maynard and wife Donna of Clinton; five sisters, Delphia Chance of Dunn; Vernell Brewington of Dunn; Pearl Bell of Clinton; Louise Maynard and husband Johnny of Highpoint; and Joyce Locklear of Clinton; two brothers, Lacy Maynard and wife Anna of Dunn; and Talmadge Maynard and wife Margaret of Benson; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a special friends, Danny McLamb of Clinton.

The family received friends 6-8 PM, Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home of Clinton, and other times at the home.

The funeral services were held at 3 PM, Sunday, May 28, 2017 at New Bethel Baptist Church, Clinton, with the Rev. Terry Cummings, the Rev. Dr. Mike Cummings and the Rev. Ken Simmons officiating.

Burial was made in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Clinton.
