Samuel E. Ward, Sr., 91, of Independence, passed away Friday, March 13, 2009, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 19, 1917, in Reynoldsville, son of the late Edward Grafton and Anna M. (Roe) Ward.

Sam was in the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. He started his career as a mailman in Independence, moved to Olin Mathison Chemical plant in Morgantown, and then worked several years at Sterling Faucet and the Ruby Farms. He retired from the WV Department of Highways in 1979, where he was a grader operator.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mildred E. (Weaver) Ward; one son, Samuel E. Ward, Jr., and wife Shirley "Mame," of Sterling, VA; one son-in-law, Elbern Wiles, of Newburg; five grandchildren, A. Deanene Wiles of Newburg, Jennifer D. Mullenax and husband Thad of Greenville, SC, Nathan A. Ward and wife Angela of Manassas, VA, Jarott A. Ward and wife Sarah of Stevens City, VA, and Michael E. Wiles and wife Eron of Carmichaels, PA; seven great-grandchildren, William D. Mullenax, Noah A. Mullenax, Anna R. Mullenax, Amanda A. Mullenax, Abigail L. Mullenax, Samantha J. Ward, and Breanna E. Wiles; three brothers, Robert Ward of TX, Ray Ward and wife Mary of SC, and James Ward and wife Helen of PA; one sister, Naomi Price and husband Charles of PA; and one sister-in-law, Ethel Ward of Grafton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Anita Wiles, in May 2008; one grandson, Shawn Dean Wiles, in 1980; three brothers, Ralph Ward, Wilbert Ward, and Carl Ward; seven sisters, Evelyn Phillips, Betty Peffer, Doris Kolar, and four of the seven in infancy, Doris, Delores, Phillis, and Florence Ward.

Burial will be in Gladesville Cemetery with Pastor Terry K. Hagedorn officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Col. Rowan Post 2345, Preston County Chapter 977, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Preston County Honor Guard.
