Camiel was born in Ooskamp in West Flanders Belgium to Joannes Fiems and Léonie DeVrieze. While his brother Archie had already traveled to North America and settled in Canada as a tobacco farmer, Camiel instead immigrated to the United States in 1913 and settled in East Moline. In 1914 he sent for his fiancé, Elizabeth M Tuytens and they married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in East Moline on 4 June 1914.

With experience as a butcher and grocer, Camiel built a meat market and grocery located in East Moline (you can still see the "CFiems" on the upper façade of this building as of 2017) that they ran for most of the roaring 1920's. In 1929 they moved to Moline, where they bought and ran a tavern called "The Wooden Shoe". For over twenty years they were known by all the locals as "Ma" and "Pa" Fiems.

They had three sons together; Joseph (Joe), Archiel (Archie), and Francis (Frank).

In 1955 they retired and sold the business to their son Joseph and spent time with their other two sons and families down in Arizona.
