A. Halsey 1857-abt 1863 8th child and 4th daughter of William and Hannah (Southmaid) Halsey.

Family history tells the story of the two metal hoops on lot 49. These once were covered with climbing roses. They were the monuments for 4 of the Halsey family children that were buried there during the diphtheria epidemic in the early 1860's. They were buried in the middle of the night without service to stop the spread of the disease.

Their given names are lost to history but the hoops still stand on Lot 49.

William (also spelled Willman) Halsey was married to Hannah Southmaid. Hannah’s death certificate states she was the mother of 10 children. At this time, only 9 have been found. Perhaps the 10th was stillborn or died as an infant.

The 1850 Census has them in Delta/Eaton Michigan with 4 children.

In the early 1860’s a deadly Diphtheria epidemic went through the area.
In 1863 William purchase lot 49 in the Howard Cemetery, Ingham Township. Ingham County, Michigan.

It is believed that the 4 younger Halsey children were the ones that died from this terrible disease. At this time, the exact date cannot be found. By the date of the burial site purchase it will be assumed that it was in 1863.

The only census showing the 4 children did not include their given names.
At this time, they will be named with their first initial and gender on the memorials. Research will continue.

William and Hannah are buried on this lot also. Along with 4 unknown Halsey children, their brother, Paul and Hannah's sister Sarah Southmaid.
