On October 23, 1941, Marie was united in marriage to Alfred G. Fessler at the parsonage for St. John’s UCC, Schwarzwald. Alfred preceded her in death on July 17, 1989. Marie took great pride in raising her family and being a mom. She worked alongside Alfred at Fessler’s Mill & Hardware in School Hill for many years, taking care of all the bookwork for the hardware, TV and appliances, lawn and garden equipment, and LP gas ends of the business. She was a member of St. James UCC where she was involved with the Ladies Aid. In her free time she enjoyed working in her garden, as well as cooking and baking. Marie was a whiz with sewing hooks and needles. She crocheted, embroidered, and made dresses, gowns, costumes, and even an occasional suit for her family. When her daughter, Elaine, at the age of 2, had the honor of being the flower girl at Norman and Shirley Spindler’s wedding, mom sewed a miniature copy of Shirley’s bridal gown for Elaine!
Survivors include her two daughters, Joanne Fessler in School Hill and Elaine (Allen) Hansen in Kiel; two grandchildren, Philip (Nikki) Hansen and Bradley (Michelle) Hansen; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Lauren, and Collin Hansen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred, and their infant son, Donald; three brothers, Oliver (Lauretta) Rautmann, Elroy (Frieda) Rautmann, and Allen (Doris) Rautmann; and one sister, LaVilla (George) Lutze. Also, Marie is both survived by and preceded in death by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services for Marie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019, at St. James UCC, 13312 Pioneer Road, Newton (Spring Valley), with Pastor Patrick Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A time of visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. James United Church of Christ.
Marie's family would like to thank the caring staff at Field of Dreams Assisted Living for the friendship, kindness, and compassion shown to Marie and her family over the past three years.
