David Abel, who settled on section 13, in that town, in 1850. The town was originated in the spring of 1856, and was called Abel in honor of the father (David) of the subject (Henry) of this record, but the following year it was changed to Schleswig. David Abel was born in 1799, in Prussia, Germany. In 1849 he emigrated with his family to Sheboygan County, but the following year settled in Manitowoc County, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1881. The wife and mother died three years later. Their family numbered 12 children, but several of them died in early life
