Born in Pommern in 1799, his full name was Johann David Abel (according to the confirmation record of son, Johann). He married Caroline (see her bio for maiden name variations), before February 1828. While the family's arrival in America is unclear, daughter Ernestine was born in Germany in 1849 and the family appeared in the 1850 Manitowoc County Census. According to the below cited reference, he was the first to settle in the area later known as Schleswig after the Indians departed. In honor of this the town was originally called Abel. David's son Henry was the first white child born in the area and his daughter's marriage to John Kaemmerer was the first in the area. David and Caroline lost two daughters, Hannah and Ernestine after their arrival in America. John Carl (Johan) also predeceased his parents in 1878. David, Caroline and John are buried together.
