Gerhart "Doc" "Gary" Tess, age 86, a resident of Wisteria Haus, 2741 45th St., Two Rivers, went home to be with the Lord and reunited with his wife, Grace, in heaven, Saturday morning, May 23, 2009.

Gerhart was born in Kewaunee, Aug. 5, 1922, to the late John and Ella Nimmer Tess and also was educated in Kewaunee. He entered active military service on Dec. 7, 1942, serving with the U.S. Army during Word War II. Doc was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C., and served with the Medics in the 101st Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged Nov. 20, 1945. On April 27, 1946, he married Grace Christoffel in Two Rivers. She preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 1989. Mr. Tess was employed with the Metal Ware Corp. in Two Rivers for 42 years, retiring as plant superintendent in 1987. He was a charter member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, many terms on the church council and a money counter. Doc was a longtime member of the Two Rivers Parks and Recreation Horseshoe League and enjoyed playing cards in several card clubs and with his family, his favorite game being Sheepshead.

Survivors include his children: Kay Wegner of Manitowoc, Kathy (Robert) Fitzgerald of Newton, Audrey (Peter) VandenBusch of Manitowoc, Carol (Kevin) Steidl of Neenah, and Al (Lori) Tess of Manitowoc; 10 grandchildren: Nathan Wegner, Melissa (Adam) Noskowiak, Chris (Kim) Fitzgerald, Katherine (Dan) Stephani, Brittany Fitzgerald, Curtis VandenBusch, Lindsey and Adam Steidl, Carrie (Aaron) Stecker and Kimberly (Dale) Wiena; and eight great-grandchildren. He is further survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Roland (Marion) Tess of Kiel, John (Marie) Tess of Mishicot; three sisters: Lillian Seidl, Joyce Shimanek and Pearl Brusky, all of Kewaunee; one brother-in-law: Harvey Schneider of Mishicot; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; one sister, Erna Schneider; three brothers: Edwin, Gilbert and Orville Tess; two sisters-in-law: June Tess and Laverne Tess; three brothers-in-law: John Seidl, Alvin Shimanek and Myron Brusky; two nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2140 34th St., Two Rivers. The Rev. Louis Sievert will officiate at the service, with burial to follow in Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. Military graveside rites will be accorded by members of the American Legion and VFW Post of Two Rivers.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 18th St., Two Rivers, and at 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church-General Fund.

The Tess family would like to express a sincere thank you to the entire staff at the Wisteria Haus for their compassionate care and kindness extended to our father over the years. The loving care that he received was very much appreciated.
