John Brooks Tuttle

John Brooks Tuttle, born Sept.27,1872 Barterbrook,Augusta Co.,Va.; married Mary Rebecca McCutchan April 28,1897, Shemariah Church,"The Willows" Middlebrook,Va.

John graduated from Augusta Military Academy,Fort Defiance,Va and University of Virginia (M.D. 1896), interned 1896-7 Mothers and Babies hospital (Now part of Columbia-Presbyterian) New York City.

He became a country doctor,practicing in several localities but principally in Craigsville,Va.He contributed strongly to the development of Craigsville.

He persuaded James McFarland, of Charlottesville,Va., to open and operate the first drug store in Craigsville.He founded and managed the Craigsville Quarries.He was involved in bringing the Stillwater mills to the town,thereby providing employment for more than 100 persons.The sale of his land to the mills was termed "Tuttle's First Addition to Craigsville"

John Brooks Tuttle & Mary Rebecca McCutchan had eight Children.

He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.After retiring from Active practice, he was associated with Bausch & Lomb up to the time of his death in Danville,Va,Sept.12,1949.
Both he and his wife are buried at Thornrose Cemetery,Staunton.
