Johnny and his wife Helen made root beer in a washtub for their wedding reception which was a hit with kids who had never tasted soda pop. After they divorced, Johnny lived with his sister Olga before moving to 2907 Sell St. out on the east edge of town. Uncle Johnny had an huge, old oil burner in the living room which roasted the place in winter. Like many of the Hafemans, he sometimes was surprisingly matter-of-fact. Lynn Wilde Krueger, his grand-niece, remembered him telling her that she had gotten fat. My sister, who has never been overweight, answered back that he needed a new eyeglass prescription since he was seeing her cock-eyed. She goes on to tell of Uncle George's funeral when Uncle Johnny and their sister, Linda exited the church together and gave each other a long, meaningful look, then burst out laughing- each wondering who will be last Hafeman kid standing. They were matter-of-fact about that too.
