Mr. James Robert Cummins, 82, of Holcomb, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020, at Merit Health – Wesley Hospital in Hattiesburg. He was born May 29, 1938, in Vaiden to Joseph Washington, Sr. and Lillie Caldwell Cummins. James was the former manager of Waste Management of Mississippi, previously served as City Manager of the City of Grenada, and also served as Grenada County Supervisor in District 5. He also served as Election Precinct Bailiff at Holcomb Community Center for the last four years. He attended Sparta Methodist Church and served as Trustee. James was a founding member of the Holcomb Lions Club and served as President for many years. A true patriot, James served for many years in the Mississippi Army National Guard. He loved his community and took pride in displaying the American Flag on the highway every patriotic holiday. James was a kind-hearted man and would do anything to help his friends and community. He loved to brighten everyone’s day (young and old) with a piece of peppermint. James was instrumental in getting the Doodlebug Festival started in Holcomb each year and enjoyed the fellowship of the many who attended.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at the Sparta Cemetery near Holcomb with Rev. Rick Shepherd officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Wednesday at McKibben and Guinn. Due to current health concerns, the family requests that all in attendance wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Cummins; four daughters, Tammy Hutchinson(Pat) of Grenada, Beth Smith of Glencoe, AR, Jamie Young(Jon) of Walls and Kelli Northrip(Stan) of Bruce; one son, David Cummins of Yazoo City; one step-daughter, Liz Grist(Cody) of Vardaman; one step-son, Bobby Hurst(Cheryl) of Greenwood; 17 grandchildren, Colby Little, Fonda Little, Drake Dotson, Riley Dotson, Zack Dotson, Ryan Young, Mallory French, Leigh Ann French, Carmen Smith Scarafiotti, Jessica Smith, Annie Smith, Robbie Cummins, Robyn Booth, Kaytlynn Sutherland, Hayden Ross, Haley Ross, and Brittaney Farmer; and seven great-grandchildren, Parker Smith, James Ashley, Riley Ashley, Finley Laycock, Verah Scarafiotti, Kemper Sutherland and SaraHurst Farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lila Welch, Eddie Pearl Caldwell, Herman, Joe, Mitchell and Crayton Cummins, and Arl and Watt Doster.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Cummins, Drake Dotson, Riley Dotson, Zack Dotson, Colby Little and Ryan Young.

Memorials may be directed to the Holcomb Lions Club.
