MARGARET DUFF HALE
ROME -- Mrs. Margaret Duff Hale, 83, who lived with her daughter, Mrs. George Kline, at Verona Mills, wandered away Tuesday night.
Her body was found floating in the Barge Canal yesterday, a mile away, by Fred Muth, a neighbor member of the searching party.
Mrs. Hale had been in ill health for some time and during her illness often walked in her sleep. She was missing when her daughter went to her mother's room at 5 a.m. Corp. Eugene Arnold and Trooper Charles Mink, Troop D. State Police assisted in the search.
She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, April 25, 1852, daughter of the late Thomas and Jane Ross Duff. She came to this country when 13 years old and had since lived in the Town of Remsen and vicinity and had made her home with her daughter 21 years.
Besides her daughter with whom she lived there survive the following children; Mrs. Alfred Tudman, Knoxboro; Thomas Hale, Port Leyden; William Hale, Mrs. Arlo Thayer, Mrs. Seth Blair, Rome; Frederick Hale, Boston, Mrs.. Herbert Scannell, Ilion; Mrs. Arthur E. Wells, Fayetteville; these brothers, Alexander Duff, Pontiac, Mich.; William Duff, Rome; a sister, Mrs. Ernestine Downend, Rome; 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
