ILION - Mrs. Rachel E. Scammell, 99 N. fourth Ave., died Tuesday, December 9, 1947 in her home following a long illness.
She was born Oct 18, 1890, in Westmoreland, daughter of Leonard and Margaret Duff Hale and attended Rome Public Schools. She was married to Leo Lacey, who died in 1916. In April, 1924, she was married to Herbert D. Scammell in Rome. Mrs. Scammell had lived in Ilion for 23 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Evening Star Chapter, OES and the Oriental Court Order of Amaranth.
Surviving besides her husband are five sisters. Mrs. Eliza Tugman, Knoxboro; Mrs. George J. Kline, Mrs. Margaret Blair, Mrs. Arie G. Thayer, Rome; and Mrs. Arthur Wells, Sydney; three brothers, Thomas Hale, Port Leyden, William, Rome and Frederick, Boston, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 1:15 p.m. Friday from the Applegate Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Verona Mills Cemetery. (Rathbunville Cemetery)
