Melvin J. Greuel

Melvin J. Greuel, age 93, of New Holstein, formerly of rural Kiel (Cedar Lake), passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton.

Melvin was born May 4, 1923, in the Town of Russell near St. Cloud, to Alvin & Irene (Voelker) Greuel. He attended St. Cloud Catholic Grade School. He served in the US Army in the Pacific Theatre from January 12, 1943 until January 19, 1946.

On October 2, 1948, he married Mary Ellen Vogel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chilton. Melvin had worked for a short time at Mercury Marine and Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac before moving to Franklin and later on to Menomonee Falls where he worked for Skelgas Liquid Propane until he retired as branch manager in 1984.

He was a member of Saint's Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Kiel and a member of the New Holstein American Legion Post 124. Mel loved to tend to his garden in Florida and back here in Wisconsin. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a very giving person, always willing to help anyone and willing to give them the shirt off his back.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen; his three children, Linda (Dale) Smythe of Kiel, Barbara (Wayne) Long of Hernando, FL and Robert Greuel of West Bend; two step-granddaughters; his sisters and brothers, Vivian Baker of West Bend, Glenroy (Theresa) Greuel of Kiel, Oliver (Rita) Greuel of New Holstein and Joanne Riesterer of Brillion; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Machut of Plymouth; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Alvin & Irene Greuel; his sister, Kathleen Greuel; his brother, Orville Greuel; three brothers-in-law, Harvey Baker, Wilfred Riesterer and Jamon Machut.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Larry Abler OFM Cap., his first cousin, will officiate. Military Rites conducted by the State Military Honors along with the New Holstein American Legion Post 124, will take place at the church following the mass. Entombment will take place at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
