Raymond W. Hein, age 85, of 2810 Harding Place, Manitowoc, entered eternal life Friday morning, Jan. 20, 2006, at his family residence.

Private memorial services will be held for the family at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Cremation will have taken place with burial of the remains to be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Ray was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Clover. He was the son of the late Phillip and Elsie Trost Hein. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After being honorably discharged Ray returned to Manitowoc and was employed with the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry from were he retired in 1983. On Jan. 27, 1951, he married Leona M. Pokorski at St. Casimer's Catholic Church in Northeim.

Ray loved reading anything about history. He greatly enjoyed walking, sports, traveling, coaching and umpiring youth baseball in Newton, watching the Milwaukee Brewers, politics and visiting with friends at the Penquin Restaurant. His love and knowledge of politics spilled over to his grandson Justin, who at an early age started hi interest and love of politics.

Ray is survived by his wife of 54 years; Onie; a son: Mel (Marlene) Hein; four daughters: Joan (Lloyd) Free, Pat (Dave) Nickels, Susie Hein and friend Jeanie Hansen, and Wendy Hein and friend Rob Weta; nine grandchildren; Cindy (Duane) Hofstra, Lori Hagen, Jennifer Nickels, Justin Nickels, Breanna Hein, Caleb Hein, Joey Houston, Garrett Houston, and Connor Houston; two great-grandchildren: Paige Hagen and Logan Hofstra; a brother: Francis (Dorothy) Hein; three sisters: Dorothy (Howard) Schmitz, Anne Cerkas, Martha Linsmeier; brother-in-law: Francis Linsmeier; sister-in-law: Agnes Hein, New Mexico; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends surviving including his very special cat, Cleo, who kept him company and stayed by his side until the very end. He was preceded in death by four brothers: John, Bernard, Richard and Paul Hein; two sisters: Gertie Kowalski and Marie Linsmeier; three brothers-in-law: Clem Linsmeier, Louis Cerkas, Vernon Kowalski; two sisters-in-law: Helen Hein and Lucy Hein.

A special thanks to Dr. Richard Theobald and his staff for all the years of caring and to the VNA hospice along with Linda and Robbie for their support. We also wish to thank the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 North Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
