William F Sauermann came to America by himself in 1840. He arrived in Baltimore MD aboard the ship Everhard coming from Bremen, Germany. A shoemaker, a trade he learned from his father, William wrote to his family about the opportunities in America and they followed in his footsteps a year later.

In November of 1842 William married Sarah Anne Kirshaw, They had ten children together, five of whom survived infancy; Henry, Charles Frederick, Annie Elizabeth, William Earnest, and Sarah Ellen.

At 60 years of age, William decided he'd had enough of making shoes and decided to become a farmer. He moved his family to Iowa in November of 1854, locating in Blue Grass, Scott County.
