Carl Heinrich "Henry" Sauermann came to Baltimore, MD aboard the ship the Leontine with his parents and siblings in June of 1841 to find a new life. As was his father and brothers, Henry was a shoemaker. He lived with his family in the Fredericktown area of Maryland for several years until he met Margaret Fritz whose parents also immigrated from Germany.

They married in July of 1850 in Louisville, KY and lived there long enough to have their first two of three children; Charles and Matilda Helena. They relocated to Chatham in Ontario, Canada (right across the river from Detroit) and added their third child to the family; Augustus Ernest.
