As a teenager, Ernest Sauermann came to America in June of 1841 aboard the ship Leontine. He had departed Bremen in Germany and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland with his parents, Johann "Henry" Sauermann and Christine Hempe, and his five siblings; Charlotte, Louise, Christine "Wilhelmine", Carl Heinrich "Henry", and younger sister Fredricke "Rachel" to search for a better life. His oldest brother William had come to America the year before and presumably convinced the rest of the family that the opportunities found in America made the expensive and arduous trip worth it.

For reasons unknown, a few years later Ernest headed west to Louisville, Kentucky. He married Ms. Elisabeth Koch and together they raised 5 children; Wilhelmine Elisabetha, Emma Margaretha, Ernest Friedrich, Julius, and Mathilda. Two survived into adulthood to live full lives.

(On his familysearch page there is a letter dated 14 Dec 1863 from Ernest to his sister Rachel. We are assuming she kept this letter as her brother died a few years later.)

Gravesite Details

On 15 Aug 2021 a Louisville University assistant confirmed that an Eastern Cemetery record book lists Ernest Sauermann with a burial date of 31 Oct 1867. Due to malpractice at Eastern there is no listing of a location of where he was buried.
