ROCK-An elderly Rock man died in the front yard of his home Tuesday morning, July 21 1982 from a gun shot that police say was self-inflicted.
The man was identified as John Eller, 87, of the rock community.
Chief Deputy Keith Hare said Eller apparently walked out of his home shortly after 10 a.m. and then shot himself in the throat with a .357 Magnum revolver. There is no indication of foul play, Hare reported.
Hare, Sheriff's Department Sgt. R.E. Baugman and Deputies W.J. Francisco and Ernie Taylor conducted the investigation. His address was Box 16, Rock.
Born December 25, 1898 in Ashville, N.C., he was a son of the late Willie and Mericak Taylor Eller. He had been a resident of Rock for the past 38 years. He was a retired coal miner from the Pocahontas Fuel Corp., and was a member of UMWA Local 7086. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Narsie Midkiff Eller; five sons, David and Franklin Eller both of Bridgeton, N.J., Scott Eller of Duhring, Jack Eller of Bluefield, and Don Eller of the home; Six daughters, Mollie Burk of St. Angelo, Tx., Mary Monosoe, Shirley Eller, Mericak McKinley and Betty Muntz all of Bridgeton, Goldie Roberts of Chesapeake, Va., and Sue Bowers of Yards, Va., one brother, Lee Eller of Marion, Va.; two sisters, Callie Anderson of Marion and Martha Eller of Springfield, Oh., 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cravens-Shires Funeral Chapel at Bluewell with Rev. Tim Lusk officiating.
Burial will be in the Rock Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.
