Kathleen's cultural background was Hungarian. Her parents, Ferencz and Erzsébet Ader, emigrated from Kapuvár, Hungary to the US in 1896 and 1900 respectively. Although Kathleen was first generation Hungarian American, she did not learn to speak English until she began school at age 5. She was bi-lingual throughout her life, and was extremely proud of her Hungarian heritage.
Kathleen married Justus Federer on September 29, 1934 in Monroe County, Michigan. Together they had four children:
Lucille, Ruth, Carole, and Nadine.
Kathleen had a son, Richard Ader, born of a teenage relationship with John Bert Kish.
Richard was raised from infancy to the age of 18 by Kathleen's older sister, Mary and her husband Jack Pawlowski.
Kathleen's favorite recreations were playing Bingo, long drives in the country, going to restaurants, and she was a huge fan of the television game show, Wheel of Fortune. She loved gardening and had numerous flowerbeds on her property. Kathleen's favorite flowers were Purple Iris, and dark pink Peony.
Kathleen enjoyed reading true crime stories, and biographies or historical accounts of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.
