Daughter of Solomon Edwin King and Nettie Lucinda Dow. She was the 2nd of 5 children born to this marriage. Her full name is Maude Ethel King. She was born in Colorado while the family was on vacation.
Ethel and her parents moved to Texas in 1912.

She married James Garfied Davis 21 April 1915 in San Antonio,Bexar, Texas. W. T. Packard Doctor of Divinity married them at Southside Christian Church.

To this marriage 4 children were born: Bertha C (1916-1917), James Edwin (1917-1992), George Clinton(1919-1940), and Lucille (1924-2005). Ethel taught all her childern how to: cook, sew, and wash clothes. She told her sons they needed to know these things because how were they to survive if they did not have a wife or the wife did not know how to do any of these things.

To the neighborhood children Ethel was known as "Mamma Davis". After school everyone went to the Davis house. She was also a midwife and assisted women in the delivery of their babies.

Mamma Davis was a short women about 4'10" tall. But, she was big and full of love for anyone who crossed her path. When she would drive a car she could not see over the steering wheel. She had to look through the steering wheel and above the dashboard in order to see.

Ethel was active in the Women's groups at Southside Christian Church. "Brother Veale", their minister, would call on Mamma Davis to help when there was a need at the church.

Ethel died at home with her family and friends around her. She was loved by all that knew her.

Cause of Death: Chronic nephritis.


OBITUARY:

Mrs. Ethel King Davis, 265 Charcliff, passed away in her home, Thurs., Aug. 21st, at the age of 68 years. Survivors, daughter, Mrs. Lucille Armstrong, son, Mr. James Edwin Davis, both of San Antonio; sister, Mrs. Margaret Holmes, Tarklo, Mo,; brothers, George King, Kansas City, Mo.; 3 grandchildren, Darelyes Ann and Henry T. Armstrong, Jr., Kathryn Eileen Davis. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Alamo Funeral home, Sat., Aug. 23rd at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. T. Ervin Veale officiating. Interment will be in San Jose Burial Park. Mrs. Davis was a member of Southside Christian church. Pallbearers will be the Rev. McDonald, Lee Stroud, Herbert Scruggs, Robert Mills, R. B. Morris, John Moore, Fred Garcia and Ed Ackenroth.
