Our condolences are extended to the family and friends of Ernest William Haught, 74 of Fairview, formerly of Metz, who passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Tygart Center in Fairmont. He was born November 2, 1947 in Metz, a son of the late David "Dick" Haught and Helen Sturgeon Haught. Ernest was the last surviving member of his immediate family, which consisted of 11 children.
Ernest is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years Ellen Mae Haught whom he married February 20, 1970, his oldest son Buddy (Jessica) Haught of Gibsonburg, Ohio, his sister-in-law Mary Simpson Haught of New Castle, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his youngest son Buckley Allen Haught in August of 1994, four infant babies, his siblings David (Jeanie and Genieve) Haught, Elizabeth Ann "Betty" (Glen) Yost, Charles "Ed" Haught, infant Joseph Leroy Haught, Jeanette Haught, Robert "Bob" (Carol) Haught, Donald (Rocksie) Haught, Nellie June (Orland) Floyd, Mary Ellen (Robert) Higginbotham and toddler Leona Marie Haught.
Ernest attended grade school in Metz and Glovers Gap and was a graduate of Mannington High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in May of 1967 where he served 3 tours in Vietnam and LAOS from 1968-1971 where he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Valorous Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, numerous overseas bars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Ernest worked secular jobs in manufacturing and HVAC in Massachusetts before relocating to New Castle, Pennsylvania where he retired after 28 years with New Castle Refectories in 2007 as a kiln fireman and inspector. He was an avid bowler, billiards and pool player. He enjoyed playing dominos and several card games. He was a lover of classic westerns and John Wayne, which he passed on to his children. He was a fan of WVU football and the Pittsburgh Steelers and professional wrestling. After retirement, Ernest returned to West Virginia to tinker and work on various home projects living in Rymer and finally in Fairview, WV for the last 12 years.
Ernest will be laid to rest beside his youngest son Buckley in Graceland Cemetery in New Castle, Pennsylvania where a graveside service will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 12:00 noon with Military Honors provided. Ernest despised dressing up and suits, and his final wishes of a casual service and relaxed remembrance will be honored. Masters Funeral Home in Mannington has been placed in care of Ernest's final arrangements.
