Funeral services to honor the life of James Alexander Rice will be at First Baptist Church, Shreveport, on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Burn Page, pastor of First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, assisted by the Rev. Nick Davis, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Shreveport. Interment in Forest Park Cemetery. Visitation at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.

Mr. Rice passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 in Baton Rouge. Alex Rice was born Feb. 4, 1944, in Shreveport. He attended Jesuit, Marion Military Institute and graduated from Centenary College.

Mr. Rice is survived by his wife of 33 years, Susan Elgin Rice; his daughters, Jennifer Elizabeth Rice, Susannah Elgin Rice and Mary Beth Rice; and his son, James Alexander Rice Jr. He is also survived by his brother, Carl Rice and wife Ellen; his mother-in-law, Delena Elgin; a brother-in-law, Jim Elgin and wife Mary Ann; and brother-in-law, John Elgin. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Marshall Rice, Joel Rice, Martha Frances Rice, Rebecca Elgin and Leigh Elgin. Alex is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Irwin J. Rice and Martha Jones Rice; his brother, Lane Jefferson Rice; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Rice and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jones.

Pallbearers will be Gil Broussard, Dr. Judd Chidlow, Frank Hall, Ty Harvison, Bill Johnson, Wiley "Booger" Montgomery, Jimmy Tindall and David Wang. Honorary pallbearers are his brothers-in-law, Jim Elgin and John Elgin and his cousins, Chuck Rice, Dr. Joe Rice, Vincent Rice, Winston Rice, Marshall Jones and David Jones.

Mr. Rice was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also held memberships in Ducks Unlimited, National Rifle Association, Cotillion Club, Demoiselle Club, Shreveport Club, National Homebuilders Association and Louisiana Homebuilders Association.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Alex owned and operated Alex Rice Builder Inc. for more than 36 years, building residential and commercial buildings in Shreveport, Rogers, Ark., and currently in Baton Rouge.

He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing at his family camp. Alex never met a stranger and was a friend to many.
