The June 7, 1917 edition of the North Carolina Christian Advocate included:

Obituaries.
Paul. --Silas Wesley Paul was born June 30, 1859 and died December 12, 1916. On January 30, 1891 he was married to Miss Mary E. Holcomb, who died June 11, 1896. Of this short but happy union, there were born three children, two of whom, Frances and Samuel, survive him, the other dying in infancy.

Brother Paul was converted and joined the Methodist Church early in life, and from then until he fell on sleep and awaked in the glory land, he was a true, faithful and loyal member.

He was a devoted husband, a kind loving father and one of the truest friends I have ever known. Though an invalid for a year or so before his death and the last few weeks a great sufferer, he bore it all with a patience and fortitude that was beautiful. To the children he has left a great legacy, a life well lived. May they by grace divine be enabled to meet him up yonder. --Andrew J. Groves.
