Elizabeth Burkhart was one of ten children born to Raymond Sanderson Burkhart (1817-1888) and Elizabeth Jane Wassom (1822-1862), both of Tennessee. Elizabeth was born on Aug 14th, 1844 in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa. In May of 1847, the extended family, which included her grandparents, John and Rebecca (Baltzell) Burkhart, and nine aunts and uncles (except for her uncle, Calvin Peter Burkhart, who came with his family four years later), set off on the Oregon Trail for the Willamette Valley of the Oregon Territory. They arrived in October, 1847 and settled at what would later become the town of Albany, Linn County, Oregon. Following the end of the War Between the States, Martin Thomas Lindsey, a native of Ohio who had relocated to Oregon prior to enlisting in the Union Army in August 1861, was discharged Feb 3rd, 1865 and returned to Oregon where he again took up farming near Lebanon in Linn County, Oregon. During this time, he met and was taken with young Elizabeth Burkhart. They courted and were married Dec 3rd, 1874 in Linn Co., Oregon. Martin took his new bride to his farm and they lived in the Albany area until his demise in 1896. At that time, Elizabeth moved into town, living at 180 Madison St., Albany, Oregon until her death prior to her 65th birthday from Nephritis on July 17th, 1909. She left behind four children: Lulu, b.1875, Elmer Dean, b.1880, Laura Belle, b.1884, and Thomas Gwin, b.1886. I've not been able to find any of their children on Find A Grave (Eff. Jan 2015). Elizabeth is buried with her husband at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn Co., Oregon.

[Her father and my great, great grandfather were brothers.]

Please note: While the Raymond Burkhart family left in 1846 for Oregon, due to his pending birth as they came down the west side of the Blue Mountains in Umatilla County, the family diverted to the Whitman Mission in 1846 and brother George Fred was born in October. The family "falled and wintered" at the mission until the late spring/summer 1847 when they joined up with the 1847 James Curl Wagon Train to Linn County, Oregon and arrived via the Barlow Road in October 1847. (On November 29, 1847, the Whitman Massacre happened.)
