John W. Darling Jr., 70, of County Route 17 died Friday at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Jewell, Mr. Darling also lived in McConnellsville before moving to Bernhards Bay 35 years ago. He retired in 1981 as a machinist after 37 years with Hardin Furniture Co.

Mr. Darling was a member of the New York State Trappers Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, the former Clara Hendrickson; six daughters, Ruth Beirman, Jean Groff and Virginia Darling , all of Bernhards Bay, Carol Brown of Canastota and JoAnne Keegan and Helen Seaton, both of Camden; three brothers, the Rev. Richard of Cleveland and Norman and Gerald, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight sisters, Clara Davis of Cleveland, Theresa Smith of Jacksonville, Doris Angarano of Baldwinsville, Bernice Bolster of Westdale, Leta Campany, Helen Reed and Mildred Darling , all of Oneida, and Geraldine Clark of Rome; 19 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Watson Funeral Home, Central Square. Spring burial will be in Maple Flats Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 206 S. Main St.

Contributions may be made to the North Shore Ambulance Corps, Cleveland.
