CONOVER - Adrian Lafayette Shuford Jr., 90, died Dec. 30, 2000, at Abernethy Center in Newton after a period of declining health.

Adrian was born Dec. 23, 1910, in Hickory, NC to Adrian L. and Annie Warlick Shuford.

A member of Trinity United Church of Christ, he served on all the church's boards and committees. He also was superintendent of the church school and served as an elder for many years.

A former mayor of Conover, he was a member of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners and was elected to the board of trustees in 1944. He served as secretary of the board of trustees and served as its chairman for 26 years.

A trustee emeritus, Catawba College honored him with a doctorate of humanitarian services for his outstanding leadership. The performing arts center on the campus was named for him and his wife.

A state Senator, he served two terms and was chairman of the committee on higher education. He also helped with the expansion of the University of North Carolina system. He was honored in September 1999 by the city of Conover with the establishment of the Adrian L. Shuford Jr. Conover Citizenship Award for recognition of extraordinary citizenship. He was cited for his business career in the community for the manufacturing of socks and gloves and in banking.

He was the founder of the YMCA of Catawba Valley and was the first president of the local YMCA.

He served as president of Conover Knitting Mill and secretary of Warlong Glove Company. Chairman of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers, he also was director of Riegel Textile Corporation and the Southern Hosiery Manufacturers Association. President of Shuford National Bank, he was director of First National Bank of Catawba County, which merged with First Union.

A lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II.

He established Jackson Buff Corporation in 1959. The first president of Newton-Conover Rotary Club, he also served as president of the Blowing Rock Country Club and was the second president of the former Eastern Catawba County United Way.

He was a member of the board of trustees of Catawba County Library. The security and director's offices at the Salvation Army campus in Hickory were named in honor of him as a result of a gift made in his honor to the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter Capital Campaign.

A supporter of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he served on the development board and was active in fund-raising roles. A supporter of Catawba Valley Community College and the performing arts, he served on the board of the Western Piedmont Symphony.

He also was Catawba County's fundraiser for the North Carolina School of the Arts and for North Carolina Public Television.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Cilley Shuford.
