Francis "Frank" Stanfel was born in what was then known as Rudolphswert(h) in the Duchy of Carniola of the Austrian Empire. The duchy is now part of the country of Slovenia. In 1885, he married Ursula Knafelc; their first child, named after Frank, was born in 1889. In 1891, the small family left Europe to journey to the United States, where they settled in Calumet, Michigan. It was in Calumet that son Albin and daughters Angela and Christine were born.
Like many other new immigrants living in the Keweenaw, Frank attained work in the booming copper mines. He performed various jobs for the Calumet & Hecla Mine, working as a watchman, trammer, and miner, among other positions.
At the time of his death in 1925, Frank was the grandfather of nine. He was survived by his wife Ursula and his children.
