John Henry Longbottom was the son of John Longbottom and Mary Ann Hopton. He was born in Newton, West Yorkshire, England,

John was in Company D of the 126th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. John was wounded in the "Battle of the Wilderness" in virginia and was hospitalized for several months. He also spent some time at "hard labor" andforfeited some pay for insubordination before being mustered out of the Army near Washington DC on 25June1865.

He married Otilia Snyder in 1867 after serving in the Civil War.
