Edward is found living in Washingtonville, Mahoning Co., Ohio in the 1870 Federal Census with his parents. The census spells the name LONGBOTTOM as LONGBAT. He may have gone on to Fairbury, Livingston Co., Illinois and lived with his sister Frances Longbottom Hetherington and her family until he married Edith Jane Hinshaw there in 1884.

FAIRBURY- Edward Longbottom died at his home on East Locust street at 12:35 a.m. Thursday. The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the home, the Rev. Evan Roberts, pastor of the Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery. He was born June 8th 1856 in Schuylkill county Pennsylvania, son of John and Mary Ann Longbottom. The family moved to Ohio when he was 10 years old. He followed the trade of coal mining most of his life. His marriage was to Edith Hinshaw in Fairbury in 1884. He was a member of the Baptist church. The widow survives.
The pall bearers for the late Edward Longbottom were B.C. Slaughter, Frank Hanner, Henry Troehler, Ide Harris, Robert Harris, and Clark Harris.
