Mary Ann Hopton was the daughter of Henry Hopton and MaryMickelfield. She married John Longbottom in 1834.

In 1851 John and his wife Mary were living at 4 Ellerby Street in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. In the home, John was listed as Head age 38 a coal miner born in Rothwell; Mary Ann - Wife age 34 born in Oulton; Mary - Daughter age 13 a flax doffer born in Rothwell; Frances - Daughter age 11 a flax doffer born in Newton; John H - Son age 9 born in Newton; and Thomas - Son age 6 born in Rothwell. .

John and his wife Mary left Liverpool, England for the USA with five of their living children in 1854 on the ship Hibernia. They arrived September 13, 1854 in Philadelphia. Their last son, Edward Longbottom, was born at Mt Laffe, Schuylkill Co., Pa. on June 8, 1856. Their daughter Mary Ann also married William Beadle there on June 22, 1856. They are next found in Hammondsville, Jefferson Co., Ohio where he entered into an agreement to buy a house on 01April1859. John was naturalized on August 3, 1859 at the Court House in Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Ohio Book B Page 404. On 27January1869 he obtains the house he entered into agreement for ten years earlier.

The last known record for both of them is in the 1870 Federal Census of Green, Twp., Mahoning Co., Ohio where they are listed on the same page (137B) as John and Mary Longbat (not Longbottom) next to Edward Longbat and Jonathan Longbat. Their son John is on page 139A. Mary is last found in the 1880 Census at Washingtonville, Mahoning Co., Ohio Census living as a widow.
