Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan 4 in the Etna Wald LDS Chapel for Mrs Viola Jane Gardner Roberts, 64, a Star Valley pioneer, who died Sunday at Logan of cerebral hemorrhage. Bishopric counselor Dean Humpherys was in charge.
Burial was in the Etna cemetery with the Nelson Funeral Home of Logan in charge of arrangements.
Mrs Roberts who was the next to the last survivor of a family of 13 (14 including an adopted sister) suffered her first stroke about six years ago and her health has been poor since. She was visiting a daughter, Mrs LaGrande Hobbs at Logan at the time of her passing.
Born in Afton, December '11 1891 to Brigham L. and Adell Gardner, she lived her early life in Afton and attended schools here. She later worked as post mistress in the Afton post office under William Cazier.
She went to work at Etna for her future husband, David E. Roberts in a general merchandise store and married him in the Salt Lake Temple May 27, 1920. They have resided in Etna most of the time since and raised their family there. Mr Roberts who is 88 years old, has been in poor health in recent years and the couple have stayed part of the time with members of their family in Utah for the past several years usually returning to Etna summers.
Mrs Roberts was active in the church and served in various capacities in the Etna ward.
She is survived by her husband, David E. Roberts, Etna; four sons David G. Chicago, Dee G. Richard D and Delaine all of Salt Lake City; two daughters Mrs DeOna Hobbs Logan and Mrs Adell Trottier, Vernal, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs Cariel (Vilate) Anderson, Grover, and Mrs Elmer (Mildred) Roberts (adopted sister) Ogden,
