Nevermore will our walls echo the old familiar songs she loved to sing, as we have lost our beloved entertainer and inspiration, our mother and grandmother, Permilla Lockard Hess. I do not think that we will ever again meet a person so willing and eager to accept life as it came to her, so calmly and without regret or who had such an ability to find fun and joy in everything she did.
Permilla, whose great-great-grandparents were listed on the very first American census in Maryland taken in 1790, was born in Nelson, WI October 8, 1883, the youngest child of W. Delancey and Hannah (Best) Lockard.
Permilla had an excellent memory and often entertained her loved ones by telling stories of her childhood, especially of the pranks she pulled on her older sisters. In 1897 she married Edwin Hess of Nelson and began her long life as an adult. Permilla never once lost her youthful spirit and joy in living, not even in the hospital during her last few moments with her family in this world. Never did she let her mind dwell on the negative aspects of life. Instead, she would advise, "Don't worry, my Dear." She could take any situation and find something humorous about it. She could make everyone around her laugh and relax. Her great faith in God helped her to always see the brighter side of life. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Nelson, WI.
Permilla passed away in the Durand Hospital on Mar 11, 1976 at the age of 92. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Edwin, in 1946 and a daughter, Pearl Wesley, in 1956. Surviving her are 11 children, five sons: Russell, Milaca, MN, Walter and Albert, Nelson, Melvin of Cochrane, WI, and Clayton of Pepin, WI, six daughters: Mrs. Christina Adams and Mrs. Oren (Vera) Ellingson, Madison, Mrs. Robert (Rose) Braun, Minneapolis, MN, Mrs. Herbert (Dorothy) Dummer, Nelson, Mrs. Marvin (Betty) Schroeder, Alma, WI and Mrs. Reathel Myren, Durand, WI, 33 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Nelson Church of Christ, Bro. Rodney Wald of Minneapolis officiated. Three Granddaughters, Mrs. Virginia Prussman, Mrs. Doris Finn and Mrs. Barbara Huber, who sing professionally, sang her favorite hymns. They are daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Braun.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were grandsons: Jerry, Wayne, Daniel, Gregory, Ronald and John Hess, Roger Myren, James Weaver, Earl Adams, Norman Wesley Jr. and Albert Wesley and one great-grandson, Daniel Lemke.
After the clouds the sunshine, after the winter the spring, after the shower, the rainbow, for life is a changeable thing. After the night the morning, bidding all darkness to cease, After life's cares and sorrows, the comfort and sweetness of peace.
