The youngest child of Franz Wilhelm "Frank" Willenburg and Mary Alice Kinder, Dena was baptized at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois.

Dena married Otto Brands on 22 Aug 1905 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. They were the parents of 4 children.

Otto was a farmer in his early years, then moved the family to Overland, Missouri in St. Louis County where he worked as a miner in a local clay mine. They later had a farm in Perry, Ralls County, Missouri.

At the time of her death, Dena was 90 years, 2 months and 13 days old. She was buried on 14 Jun 1978 and was survived by her husband. Otto passed away in 1980.
