Washington was a man of many hats. He had always had deep faith and in his earlier years he had been a Methodist lay minister.
Prior to 1857 he had taken his youngest brother, Charles D. Wendell with him and gone to the basic frontier in the southwestern part of Minnesota, where he took out farm land. His father had been a shoemaker by trade, so he knew the business and did some shoemaking in that new area. In 1857 some of his family members arrived to take out more land in the area. However, he did not remain for a long period of time, but went back to the West Bend, Wisconsin area.
Here he continued his religious involvements and became a sewing machine salesman and repairman.
When Mary Baker Eddy started her initial Christian Science Movement, it apparently appealed to him and he would move to Massachuettes, where he became very involved in the Christian Science Church, even becoming a teacher within the religious group, apparently either in the mother church in Boston or one within the area he took up his residency. He also maintain the sewing machine and bicycle repair business.
