The son of Jacob and his #2 wife, Nancy Fox Gould. His ancestors were among the Wendell's, the founders of Albany, New York. He came from a large family, comprised of 12 children (8 which lived) of his father's first marriage, a 1/2 brother and sister by his mother's first marriage and 7 full brothers and sisters.

It is not known where he received his medical training.

On 10 September 1854 he married Julia Knapp, daughter of Elias and Esther Knapp, in Washington County, Wisconsin. At least in the early years he was in Washington County, Wisconsin, then at least part of the Civl War years he was in Clark County. For a period of time he went to Clitherall, Otter Tail County, Minnesota where he was the doctor in the Cutlerite community there, where his 1/2 brother George Gould resided. He only remained there a little over a year and headed back to Wisconsin. His final stop was in New Haven township in Dunn County.

After the death of his wife he married a widow Anna E. Brooks.



He died of apoplexy.
