John was the son of John J. McKellar, Sr. and Elizabeth (McCormick) McKellar.

In about 1842, John married Ann Smith in Marion County, South Carolina. Together they had seven children.

1--Amanda [1845-1895]
2--Elizabeth "Betsy" [1847-1881]
3--Milton [1849-1915]
4--Minerva [1851-1927]
5--Joseph "Joe" (TWIN) [1853-1926]
6--Mary Ann (TWIN) [1853-1899]
7--Adeline [Abt 1855-1934]

We do not have a picture of John. The picture of his headstone was taken by Linda Christenburg Moody Brown and shared the picture for his Memorial. The headstone is in pretty bad shape and almost unreadable. Linda writes that the engraving on John's death date is wrong. It shows he died in 1852, but he died in 1854 according to Roll #1764 probate records.

John was the grandson of Peter McKellar. The Peter McKellar who is mentioned in "A History of Marion County", by W.W. Sellers. Peter was among the first settlers of this section of the county. Peter owned a plantation in the Carmichael Township. Peter McKellar was born about 1755 in North Carolina and Peter died between 1834 and 1840. Linda writes that she does not know where Peter is buried.

John's birth, marriage and death all show to have been in Marion County, South Carolina. That area is now Dillon County, South Carolina.
