James Matthew Armstrong, Sr., was the son of J. W. and Irene Hunter Armstrong. He was born June 22, 1893 in Belmont, NC. He owned Armstrong Coal & Oil Co. and before retiring was postmaster for many years. He was always interested in the progress and growth of Belmont and for many years served on the official board of the First Methodist Church of Belmont. He was also a Mason and Rotarian. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Pearl Moretz Armstrong; daughter Mrs. William M. Ryalls of Belmont; and son Rev. James M Armstrong, Jr. of Paw Creek, NC. He was also survived by six sisters: Mrs. C.C. Reins (Winston Salem), Miss Clara Armstrong, Mrs. J. Bart Hall, Mrs. M.R. Patrick, all of Belmont; Mrs. Leslie West (Delaplane, VA), and Mrs. Richard Horne (Asheville); and two brothers: Eugene Armstrong (Richmond, VA) and John B. Armstrong of Belmont.
