Andrew Jackson Straw was born about 1827 the s/o Daniel David and Sarah P. (Melvin) Straw. There is no record that he ever married. He joined the military on 21 May 1861 and enlisted in H CO; 2nd Infantry Reg NH as a Private. He served in the First Battle of Bull Run [aka First Manasses] fought on 21 July 1861 in Prince William County, Virginia. This proved to be a Confederate victory. Andrew died some 4 days later in a Confederate POW Camp as a result of wounds he received while fighting.
As an aside it is interesting to note that it was during the Civil War period that embalming really got its start in the US as a means of preserving the body so it could be shipped to the family for burial. Many men were simply buried in mass graves where they fell but some families requested the remains be shipped home for private burial.
