John Spettel, 84, of R. 1, Kiel, a retired Town of Schleswig farmer, died at this home early today. He had been ill for the past several years.
Born Sept. 18, 1875, in the Town of Herman, he was a son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Spettel. As a youth, the family moved to the Town of Schleswig.
On Oct. 23, 1900, he married the former Pauline Bosma of the Town of Eaton and the couple farmed in the Town of Schleswig until their retirement 18 years ago. The couple had been living in Kiel for the past 10 years. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1950.
Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Elda) Hagenow of rural Kiel; a son, Elmer of Sheboygan; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Miss Mary Spettel of Oshkosh, and one brother, Jacob of rural Kiel. Two infant children preceded him in death along with four sisters and two brothers.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. The Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg, pastor of St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church in Kiel, will officiate and burial will be in the Eaton Cemetery.
