WALTER BURTON, 80, DIES; FORMER PELHAM SELECTMAN

Walter Spalding Burton, 80, of the Mammoth Road, Pelham, and a former selectman, died Monday in a Nashua hospital after a brief illness.

A resident of Pelham for the great part of his life, Mr. Burton had resided in Nashua for several years. He was born in Pelham on March 18, 1895, son of the late Fred A. and Harriet B. (Spalding) Burton. Educated in local schools, he was employed for many years with Gregg & Son of Nashua and later with Merrimack Optical in Pelham.

A former Pelham selectman, he had also served on the School Board for a number of years. An Eagle Scout, Mr. Burton had been active in scouting for many years and had been a member of the Nashua District Scout Committee.

Fraternally, he held membership in Pulpit Rock Lodge, F. & A.M. of Pelham, was treasurer of Pelham Grange No. 241 P. of H. He also held membership in Hill Rock Pomona Grange, the state and national Granges.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mabel (Mortlock) Burton; two sons, Donald E. Burton of Pelham and Robert J. Burton of Henniker; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Velma) Houle of Pelham and Mrs. Raymond (Mary) Robinson of Nashua; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, George A. Burton of Nashua, Ervin and Charles Burton of Hudson; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Kiernan of Dracut, Mrs. Anna Cobleigh of Tyngsboro, Mass., and Mrs. Mable Bedore of Nashua; several nephews, nieces and cousins.

The Farwell Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

DEATHS

BURTON - Died in this city, Monday, May 5, 1975, Walter S. Burton, 80, a resident of Mammoth Road in Pelham and a former Pelham Selectman. Funeral service will be held in the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock Street, Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Gibson Cemetery in Pelham. Friends are invited to attend and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
