John W. Sanders was the son of Matthew Sanders and Mary Ann Davis Sanders. He married Jane (Jennie) DuBois on 30 November 1865 in Henry County, Indiana. John was in the Civil War, serving for the Union, Indiana 36th Infantry, Company C. He was a carpenter and in his later years delivered buttermilk, then coal oil.

He was the father ten children:
Effie (died 1874 age 7 yrs. 2 mons. 2 days)
Mollie V. (died 1874 age 3 yrs.)
Mary V. (died 1874 age 6 days)
