John Jacob Boon, whose name in Holland was Jan Jacobus Boon, was born on January 8, 1838. He was born in the town of Middelstum, in Groningen Province to Jan Jacob Boon and his wife, Jaaike Klassens Dekker. He was one of about 7 children born to Jan and Jaaike.

While researching the family in the Groningen Archives, I found that the name was sometimes spelled Boon and at other times Bonema.

John's father worked in a sawmill while him mother took care of their home and family.

On November 1, 1862, John married Anna Henryette Graftema. The wedding took place in Usquert, Groningen Province, Holland. (Now the Netherlands.)

According to Mary Estella Boon Mulligan, John's daughter, John and Anna left Holland on April 5, 1866. They arrived in the port of New York on May 1, 1866. Traveling with them were Anna's father and brother, Henry and John Graftema, respectively. A Margaret Graftema also came with them.

John and Anna arrived in Chicago, Illinois on May 6, 1866. They stayed there for about 5 years. Their first two children, Catherine Elizabeth, and Johanna Margaret both born in Illinois. John would have liked to stayed in Chicago, but his wife wanted to live in the country, so the family moved to Indiana sometime between 1869 and 1874. They had 9 more children while living in Indiana: Henry Jacob, Martha, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary Estella, James, Anna B, John and one child whose name is unknown at this time.

John passed away on July 13, 1905. He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Reynolds, White County, Indiana.
