Anna was the daughter of Henderikus Johannes Graftema and his wife, Trientje Hindriks Smidt. She was born on August 27, 1840 in Uskwerd, Groningen Province, Holland (Netherlands).

On November 1, 1862, Anna married Jan Jacobus Boon. (In Holland, the name is alternately spelled Boon and Bonema.) Jan Jacobus was translated into John Jacob when the couple came to the United States.

According to Mary Estella Boon Mulligan, Anna's daughter, John and Anna left Holland on April 5, 1866. They arrived in the port of New York on May 1, 1866. Traveling with them were Anna's father and brother, Henry and John Graftema, respectively. Margaret Graftema, Anna's youngest sister, also came with them. I have been told that they had two children prior to leaving the Neatherlands: Jakobus, born Nov. 23, 1863 and Catherine, born on June 2, 1865.

John and Anna arrived in Chicago, Illinois on May 6, 1866. They stayed there for about 5 years. Children born to them were Catherine Elizabeth, and Johanna Margaret both born in Illinois. John would have liked to have stayed in Chicago, but Anna wanted to live in the country, so the family moved to Indiana sometime between 1869 and 1874. They had 9 more children while living in Indiana: Henry Jacob, Martha, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary Estella, James, Anna B, John and one child whose name is unknown at this time.

Anna passed away on September 15, 1906 in White county, Indiana. She was buried in St Josephs Cemetery in Reynolds with her husband, who had died the previous year.
