Mary Warters was one of six children born of the union of Thomas Lassiter and Willie Mae (Gholson) Warters, Mary being born on Oct 18th, 1902. Her other siblings were Agnes, Ruth, Jane, Willie Louise and Thomas. They were all raised in Rome, Georgia where their father had a tobacco farm and made cigars that were known thruout the South for their fine quality. Dear Willie Louise was in a street car accident and suffered from seizures the remainder of her life, but the rest of the children went on to college at Shorter College, now known as Shorter University, and obtained degrees in their chosen fields. Mary chose the field of Biology and went on to obtain her PhD., then began a teaching career at Centenary College of Louisiana in 1927. Not only did she teach, but she also loved to research biology, genetics and anatomy. She also worked with administration later on in her career. A plaque was erected in her honor following her retirement in 1971. She passed from this life on Dec 22nd, 1995, at the Glen Retirement Village in Shreveport, LA and her remains were brought back to be interred with her parents, brother and sisters at Fairview Cemetery, LaGrange, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. Dr. Mary Warters was my great aunt, my father's aunt, one of my paternal grandmother's four sisters.
