Obituary
The News (Frederick, MD) March 6, 1897
Howard Griffith died at his residence yesterday morning, near Beallsville, Montgomery County, aged 75 years. Death was due to Bright's Disease.
Mr. Griffith had been a prominent Democratic leader in that county for many years, having been sent to the State Legislature by that party four different times. He was a member of the Maryland Legislature when that body removed from Annapolis to Frederick for the purpose of passing articles of secession. Mr. Griffith was on the train, but, learning of the intended threat of the members of the party upon its arrival at Frederick, he left the train and escaped arrest.
Mr. Griffith had been in the service of the public since he was a young man. His first public office was that of county commissioner, which he held in 1850. Since that time he has served in the State Legislature four times. In 1889, he ran for the State Senate, but was defeated by Dr. Wootton, of Poolesville, this county. This closed his public life. For the past ten years he has been the most extensive stock dealer in Montgomery County.
He leaves a widow, two sons and one daughter.
Interment will be made in the Monocacy Cemetery at Beallsville on Sunday morning.
