"John W. "Bill" Johnson, 72, of St. George, Utah, died Aug. 18 at his home. He was born July 12, 1921, in Bozeman, MT, to John and Ivene Johnson. He grew up in Bozeman, and as a young man worked as a cowboy at many ranches in the area. In 1939 he joined the 163rd Service Infantry Co. and served during WWII in SE Asia. He was wounded several times and returned at the end of the war on a hospital ship. After the war, he started an electrical business in MT. He later moved to Bremerton where he was foreman for many large electrical companies in the Pacific NW and AK. When he retired he was business agent for IBEW Local 46 in Seattle. In 1974 he married Audrey Yager in Hawaii. The couple retired to St. George in 1981. Mr. Johnson was an avid hunter and fisherman and once caught a record black marlin in the waters off Mexico. His greatest enjoyment was fishing for steelhead in WA rivers. He was a master woodworker and gardener and was a 40 year member of the Elks. He also served as a volunteer at Dixie Regional Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Audrey, a son, Mark, of Bremerton, 7 sisters, Darlene Quist, Jaunita Ross and Altha Johnson, all of Bozeman, Lannis Hodge of Manhattan, MT, Lucille House and Betty Parks, both of Bremerton and Beth Cheney of Walnut Creek, CA; a brother, Lee, of Sandy, UT; 3 stepdaughters, Diane Higgins of Long Lake, MN, Rebecca Bayles of St. George, and Cheryl Irons of Salt Lake City, UT; 3 stepsons, Steve Hallen of Coupeville, Island County, WA, and Roy and Richard Yager, both of Bremerton; and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael. Funeral Services were Saturday at Metcalf Mortuary Chapel in St. George. Following cremation, his ashes were taken to the Rocky Mountains."
