Age approximatly 88 Years old at the time of his death.

John Gideon Bingham's headstone has his birth date as 1884. Yet according to his 1917-1918 (WWI) draft registration and his death certificate (both) he was born 9 November 1885 in the United States and died in March of 1973 in Reagan, Tennessee.

I was always told that John Gideon Bingham was of Irish heritage, but I've never been able to find any tangible proof of that.

John Gid's Maternal grandparents were Curtis & Mary Miller-Coady. They were both born in North Carolina, and both are buried at Brasher Cemetery in Bath Springs. Along with most of their Children, including two of Gid's infant daughters. There where eleven known children born to this union:

John Gid is the Paternal Grandson of John Bingham (FaG#145860702) born in 1805 in Virginia and Elizabeth J. Bingham (FaG#142859528) born in 1806 in South Carolina. There are eleven known children born to this union:

(3)John W. b.1830 in Tennessee,
(4)Wyatt H. b.1828 in Tennessee,

(10)Kissiah J. b. 1842 in Tennessee,
(11)Charles A. b. 1842 in Tennessee, and
(12)Infant (grandchild?) b.1849 in Tennessee.
(This information was found mostly in the US Census of 1850, but from a couple of other internet sources, and family members as well.)

He was the son of Leonidas E. Bingham #75857143 and Julia Anna Francis Coady-Bingham. His Father, Leonidas, fought in the Civil war. He entered the C.S.A. Army as a private in 1862 at the age of 22 and was a Corporal when he "mustered out" of the CSA Army in 1865. He was known to be in the battle of Murfreesboro and possibly many others. Leonidas and Julia's brother (Ransom Coady) both served the South during the Civil War. After the war ended Leonidas came back to Bath Springs and used his "muster out" money to build his two room (w/a breezeway) log home near the Tennessee River. His Granddaughter still lived on that farm in Decatur County, Tennessee in the 1990's. (Sources of information: Momma & Aunt H. Bingham-Creasy, Daddy, Momma, Decatur County Library, and the Cousin (Dorothy) that was living on Leonidas' family farm in the 1990's and still was there at last account I had of her) I learned recently that cousin Dorothy passed away a few years back, something like 2003. I am saddened at her loss, but our loss is heaven's gain. Rest in Peace sweet lady.

Gid grew up in Bath Springs very near the Tennessee River and the beautiful rock cliffs of the Tennessee river where the eagles nest on the ledges. It's a beautiful sight to behold.

Gid married "Bessie Jane" (a family nickname) when she was still very young. Since she was an orphan and being raised by a benevolent Aunt Anna and Uncle Jim Woody I suppose there wasn't much objection to her marring so young? or maybe she just didn't give them time to object. I really don't know, but whichever the case may be, she was not much more than a child when she and Gid were married. They went on to have a large family; some of whom never made it to adulthood. As best I can estimate it, Gid married Bessie sometime between 1904 to early 1906.

(Child #2)Lessie - age 2 Yrs 2 Mo.s 6 Days (1907-1909) and (Child #3)Lexie - 0 Years 1 Mo 0 Days (1908-1908) are buried at Brasher Cemetery in Bath Springs; they were infants and the second and third of Gid and Bessie's children. Gid and Bessie had them laid to rest with Gid's Dad (his Mother was still living when these babies died), Gid's siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents at Brasher Cemetery in Bath Springs.

After losing their baby daughters, there was more loss for Gid and Bessie. (Child #11) Alvie - 6 Yrs 10 Mo.s 30 Days (1924-1931) and (Child #9) Ruby Edna 13 Yrs 10 Mo.s 5 Days (1919-1933) were young when they passed away and were buried at Ebenezer Cemetery near Scotts Hill, just down the road from where Gid and his family lived.

Later tragedy would strike again. (Child #6) Cleo, now a young man, found a hidden whisky bottle and decided to sample the contents. It was to be a fatal mistake. Bug poison for the garden had been placed in that bottle and the bottle was then hidden, because of its toxic content. This mistake would cost Cleo his life. Cleo too, was laid to rest just down the road in the Ebenezer Church Cemetery. (1914-1937)- 23 Yrs 5 Mo.s 4 Days

At some point Gid's maiden sister, "Aunt Tiny" (aka Tina/Leantine), came to live with Gid, Bessie, and their children. She remained there until her death (1876-1952).

As for the other children:
(Child #1) George W. married Minnie E. Moody and they raised a family together. They later divorce and he went on to meet and marry Minnie Pearl Ballard and had two more sons with her. (1906-1992) approximately 86 Yrs of age

(Child #4) Charles S. "Uncle Charles" (to us kids) never married. As a child he and some of the other children were playing in the barn. Charles fell out of the hay loft. As a result of that fall his back was broken. Charles' back did not heal properly and he had a large hump on his back and walked bent over the rest of his life. He lived with Gid and Bessie his entire life. He died as the result of a shooting accident (1910-1970) at approximately 60 Yrs of age.

(Child #5) Clyde Served in WWII. He married Jewel Ross and they raised their children in the Ebenezer community. Clyde divorced Jewel and later met and later married Pauline Watson and he moved to Sardis to live with her there. Shortly thereafter Clyde was killed on his farm in Ebenezer, in a farming accident. 56 Yrs 9 Mo.s 13 Days (1912-1969)

(Child #7) Woodrow married Ortha Lomax and they moved to Alabama where he and his wife raised two sons. Woodrow was a kind and benevolent person. Woodrow would die of the same cancer as the one that took the lives of his sister (Liness) and his brother (L.E.) & years later would take his younger sister (Marie). 80 Yrs 8 Mo.s 20 Days (1916-1996)

(Child #8) Liness married Lonzo Moody and they raised four children in Scotts Hill. Liness loved children and baby sat many, many children. She was known to many as "Ma" or "Ma Moody." Liness would die of the same cancer that took the life of her brothers, L.E. & Woodrow, and sister, Marie. 82 Yrs 2 Mo.s 18 Days (1918-2000)

(Child #10) Flossie Mae married James Coy Houston, who served in WWII. Flossie had a large family which she would go on to raise alone after the untimely, accidental death of her husband, Coy. Flossie also lost a child, Randall, when he was still a toddler, in a tragic accident. Flossie died of colon cancer. 92 Yrs 1 Mo 18 Days (1921-2013)

(Child #12) L.E. (who, I was always told, was named after Gid's Father) would marry I. Stribling and have four children with his wife. He and his wife lived in Texas, Kentucky, and Illinois. He eventually settled in Sardis. He was a farmer, construction worker, factory worker, truck driver, and a maintenance man. He passed away after a six year battle with cancer and the complications that went along with it. he died of CHF because all the treatments he had to endure from the cancer took a tole on his body, especially his heart. 66 Yrs 5 Mo.s 19 Days (1926-1992)

(Child #13) Another daughter (Marie) would marry James Freeman Fields and moved to Saltillo where they raised their four daughters and one son. She worked at H.I.S. Sportswear in Saltillo for 32 yrs. She would die of the same cancer that took her brothers, L.E. & Woodrow, and her sister, Liness. (1928-2016)

(Child #14) James "Jim" married (R*by Unknown) and they had two sons. Jim later divorced his first wife. Some time later he would meet and he re-married Mrs. Norma Russell-Ross (divorcee) and they raised Norma's two daughters in Gid and Bessie's house (after Gid and Bessie had passed) When Jim passed away it was cold and snowy on the day of his funeral. While we were waiting for the service to start, in the chapel, the power went out. After a short delay the pastor held Jim's service by coal oil lamp light. I couldn't help but think of the irony; he may have been born in a lamp lit room and here was his family gathered to say "Good-bye" to him in a lamp lit room. He died due to a respiratory problems. 78 Yrs 10 Mo.s __Days (1930-2009)

(Child #15) The youngest daughter married Charles Brice Creasy and moved to Sardis. She worked at H.I.S. in Satillo, Hardin County for many years. She and Charles had only one child, a daughter.

(Child #16) The youngest son (B.) married Glydis. He moved up North to work and he and his wife raised their four children there. When he retired he, Glydis, and Robbie moved back to the Reagan/Ebenezer area. Since retiring he has lost his only son (Robbie), his youngest daughter (d.2015) and his wife. His oldest daughter & middle daughter are still living also.

Almost all of the memories I have of Gid are of a frail white haired man, but I've been told that as a younger man he was vibrant and colorful, and full of life. He lived his life as most men would imagine their lives to be, I suppose. A wife, lots of children, a nice home, a good size farm, and a zest for life.

When Gid got older and could no longer manage for himself, his son Jim quit his job at the factory in Lexington and moved in with Gid and Bessie. Jim cared for Gid and Bessie during the last year or so of their life.

Gid left this life in 1973. (I remember that day pretty well) It was a bit cool and a little blustery, but the sky was clear and blue, the sun was shining bright; his children were sad and their faces were stained with tears because their Daddy had left them. The family Patriarch was gone.
