"Sudden Death of J. F. Studebaker, Youngest of the Studebaker Brothers
Chicago, Dec. 17.–J. F. Studebaker, the youngest of the Studebaker brothers, died at the Leland Hotel, this evening, of inflammation of the bowels. He had been ill just a week. Mr. Studebaker's brothers and other members of the family were with him when he died. He was aged forty-three.

Jacob Franklin Studebaker was born in Ashland County, Ohio, May 26, 1844, and with the elder brother of his family, took up residence in South Bend in 1852. At the age of thirteen he commenced work for himself as a farmer boy, at $6 a month, continuing at this and other kinds of manual about about three years. At the end of that time he decided to learn the trade of carriage trimmer, and for that purpose went to Tiffin, O., and apprenticed himself. On completing his apprenticeship he returned to South bend and began work in the shop of one of his elder brothers. Up to this time his opportunities for acquiring an education had been limited, and so he availed himself of a two-year course at the University of Notre Dame. Among other acquirements he became proficient in the the various forms of book-keeping and other commercial business. On leaving Notre Dame he went into the service of the Studebaker company as assistant in the office, with general supervision over the labor and carriage departments. In 1868 he became a member of the company and subsequently superintendent of the carriage-works, also acting as secretary of his company, which position he held at the time of his death."
