She married Clifford A. Helke on April 3, 1943, in Sheboygan.

Leona I. Helke, age 82, of 7013 County Highway C, Manitowoc, died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Leona was born in Sheboygan on November 1, 1923, daughter of the late Walter C. and Ida (Paul) Dehne. Leona attended school in the area and proudly graduated from the 8th grade. She married Clifford A. Helke on April 3, 1943, in Sheboygan. He preceded her in death on August 20, 1997. Leona retired in 1983 from Tecumseh Mfg. and was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Newton.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law: Lynn and Judith Helke, Newton, Dennis and Jeanne Helke, Indianapolis, Michael and Rosy Helke, Manitowoc, Richard and Lori Helke, Kiel; three daughters and sons-in-law: Judith and Jerry Krueger, Sheboygan, Kathy and Tom Lalko, Newton, Yvonne and Dennis Kope, Clover; 17 grandchildren: Kelly Ertel (and special friend Don Christman), Kim (Danny) Driscoll, Karrie (and special friend Matt), James Helke, Sadie (Brian) Crawford, Sabrina (Sam) Woodford, Michael Helke (U.S. Navy stationed in Washington, D.C.), Amy (Trevor) Schwanke, Steven Krueger, Tracy (Bill) Boeckman, Tim (Cyndi) Helke, Tony (Laura) Waite, Joellyn Lalko, Marsha Mews, Jason (Chrissy) Kope, Lea Ann (Cory) DeBauch, Megan Helke; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Jeanette and William Schmalfeldt, Sheboygan, Laverne and Robert Schmitz, Newton, Verlene Kollath, Manitowoc, Milton Behringer and his wife, Rogene, Newton; two sisters-in-law: Millie Stupar, Wauwatosa, Jenny Helke, Green Bay; and special neighbor: Joyce Boldt. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Leona was preceded in death by one daughter: Maureen; one brother and sister-in-law: Walter and Maureen Dehne; four sisters and three brothers-in-law: Florence and Orville Mott, Ruth and Russell Mott, Carol Behringer, Eleanor Fisher, and Donald Kollath. Also preceding her in death were five brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2006, at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton. Presiding at the service will be the Rev. Kyle Sorensen. Burial will take place following the service at St. John Cemetery, Centerville.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday (TODAY), July 30, 2006, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc. The visitation will continue on Monday morning at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Holy Family Memorial Medical Center and Rivers Bend Nursing Facility for all of the care and compassion given to Leona and her family.
